157th birth anniversary of our East Indian Freedom Fighter Joseph (kaka) Baptista

17th March 2021 marks the 157th birth anniversary of our East Indian Freedom Fighter Joseph (kaka) Baptista.

*”Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it.”*

the legendary quote is often attributed to Bal Gangadhar Tilak. The founder of the Home Rule Movement. However, there is a growing consensus that it was not Tilak, but Joseph ‘Kaka’ Baptista, a close associate of Tilak who coined the phrase.

Kaka Baptista was a lawyer and one of the founding members of the Home Rule Movement, alongside the likes of Tilak and Annie Besant.

The movement was established in 1916 with the objective of mobilizing Indian support for Home Rule and mobilizing a force to get the British to quit India.

Joseph (Kaka) Baptista was an Indian politician and activist from Bombay (today known as Mumbai). He was the first President of the Indian Home Rule League, established in 1916.

He was elected as the Mayor of Bombay in 1925 and was given the title Kaka which means “uncle”.

On Wednesday 17th March at 09:30 am, Mobai Gaothan Panchayat (regd), along with other local activist groups and parties from Uttan, will gather at the Kaka Baptista Chowk, to pay homage and respects to our beloved Kaka.

All are welcome.
